York Acorn emerged victorious from a fiercely contested York derby, holding off a spirited Heworth comeback to claim a hard-earned 14-12 win at Elmpark Way on a dry but blustery afternoon.
The visitors made the ideal start, crossing after just four minutes when Will McCardle finished a flowing move before Matt Chilton added the conversion for a 6-0 advantage.
The opening quarter was physical throughout. Acorn’s Swales was shown a yellow card after 12 minutes following an arm-wrestle period between the two evenly matched packs, while Heworth struggled to turn territorial pressure into points despite forcing Acorn into errors and repeat defensive sets.
Heworth finally broke through in the 23rd minute when centre Harrison Briggs crossed out wide to reduce the deficit to 6-4 after the difficult conversion was missed.
Acorn squandered an opportunity to extend their lead when McCardle knocked on with the line beckoning, before tempers flared late in the half as Gallagher received a yellow card for dissent.
Despite the disciplinary interruptions, the opening 40 minutes were played at a relentless pace, with neither side able to establish control as Acorn carried a slender 6-4 lead into the interval.
Heworth levelled almost immediately after the restart. A high tackle handed the hosts a penalty, and Sadler calmly slotted the kick from in front of the posts to make it 6-6.
The game continued to swing from end to end before Acorn regained the initiative on 59 minutes. Hodder crossed for the visitors after sustained pressure, with Chilton’s conversion opening up a six-point cushion at 12-6.
Heworth refused to fold and produced another response ten minutes later. Southerington raced through a hole in the Acorn line from 30 metres out before Sadler converted to draw the scores level at 12-12 with just over ten minutes remaining.
With the contest seemingly destined for a draw, a controversial late penalty for a fifth tackle charge down handed Acorn one final opportunity. Chilton kept his composure to split the posts in the 78th minute, nudging the visitors back in front at 14-12.
Heworth pressed desperately in the closing stages but Acorn’s defence stood firm to secure a narrow derby victory.
It was a hard-fought encounter between two evenly matched sides, with little separating them throughout. Ultimately, Chilton’s reliable boot proved decisive as Acorn edged an entertaining contest by a single penalty goal.
